Review: Passenger on the Pearl: The True Story of Emily Edmonson's Flight from Slavery

Passenger on the Pearl: The True Story of Emily Edmonson's Flight from Slavery Passenger on the Pearl: The True Story of Emily Edmonson's Flight from Slavery by Winifred Conkling
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Emily Edmonson who is only 13, attempted to escape her life as a slave, with her five siblings and many other slaves. They all board the Pearl in Washington D.C. but were caught the next day and shipped to New Orleans to be sold. After help from their parents and others, Emily attended college and became the first teacher in Washington D.C. She found herself working on behalf of abolition until her eventual passing.

This was a very disturbing but enlightening book about slavery in the United States. It was a very interesting and an easy read. I think it’s a very well researched book and highly recommend it.
